Callebaut and the EUDR

Crafting a More Sustainable Future Together

At Callebaut, sustainability is at the heart of our chocolate-making journey. With the introduction of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), we’re taking another important step forward—ensuring all our products comply with the new regulation. Since 2019, the cocoa beans in Callebaut Finest Belgian dark & milk chocolates have been traceable. With EUDR we are extending our commitment to cocoa bean traceability in all our products.

What is the EUDR?

The EUDR aims to combat deforestation and promote sustainability by regulating products linked to land use, such as cocoa. It ensures that products sold in the EU comply with strict guidelines, protecting forests and biodiversity globally.

  • What is the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) in a nutshell?

    • EUDR is an initiative from the European Union  and tackles deforestation & forest degradation, drivers of global climate and biodiversity crises.
    • 7 commodities are in scope: cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, wood and rubber
      - For each commodity, a list of derived products falling within the scope (Annex 1)
      - Cocoa (commodity code 1801 to 1806), palm for BC
    • Regulation applied to imports to the EU, products made available within the EU, and exports from the EU
    • Regulation requirements apply to importers (BC) and companies placing the products on the EU Market (BC customers)
    • Corrective action and penalties for non-compliance : market recall and fines (specifics to be established by EU Member States)

Why is the EUDR Important?

Deforestation is a key driver of global climate change.

At least 50% of cocoa expansion since the 1960s has been at the expense of forests (FAO).

The EU is a major producer and consumer of commodities, such as cocoa, associated with deforestation and forest degradation.

Therefore addressing deforestation and forest degradation in laws and regulations is essential.

By complying with the EUDR, Callebaut contributes to preserving natural ecosystems and fostering a sustainable cocoa supply chain. This regulation also strengthens transparency, ensuring you can trust the ethical origins of our cocoa beans.

Our Commitment to You

Callebaut is already a step ahead, thanks to the partnership with Cocoa Horizons and our bean traceability, which was implemented in 2019.
Every Callebaut Finest Belgian dark and milk chocolate is traceable - by scanning the QR code on the back of each pack, you can discover the farming communities that have grown the cocoa beans.

Callebaut-Trace Back Your Chocolate Pack

We’re actively working with farmers to meet EUDR standards by ensuring strict traceability of all the cocoa in our supply chain, guaranteeing it is deforestation-free.

For Artisans and businesses, using Callebaut chocolate means:

  • Strict traceability: A guarantee of EUDR-compliant cocoa that meets EU requirements
