Frequently asked questions

What is the aim of the Growing Great Chocolate™ programme?
Most of the world’s cocoa is grown in West Africa, in some of the world’s poorest regions. People’s incomes depend on agriculture and natural resources. Cocoa, being a complex crop, demands the right conditions, great care and special technique. In addition, easier-to-grow cash crops such as rubber outcompete cocoa cultivation. Understanding that these factors put the future of cocoa under strain, Callebaut® started the Growing Great Chocolate™ programme, which partners up with and supports the Cocoa Horizons Foundation in order to improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and their communities through the promotion of sustainable, entrepreneurial farming, improved productivity and community development.

What is the Cocoa Horizons Foundation?
The Cocoa Horizons Foundation, an independent, nonprofit organization, was launched by Barry Callebaut in September 2015. Its mission is to improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and their communities through the promotion of sustainable, entrepreneurial farming, improved productivity and community development. The Foundation works together with supporters and partners to scale impact and drive on-the- ground change in cocoa growing communities.

How does Callebaut® contribute to a higher income for cocoa farmers?
With our partners we have established strong relationships with selected farmer groups in West Africa, together representing about 25,000 cocoa farmers. Callebaut® guarantees that for all Finest Belgian Chocolate products, a premium flows from our customers to the Cocoa Horizons Foundation. The Foundation uses them to fund cocoa sustainability activities including farmer premiums.

How does Callebaut® support farmer trainings through the Cocoa Horizons Foundation?

To safeguard the future of cocoa, we must increase the yield per hectare, helping farmers earn a better income and ensuring a lasting supply. Better cocoa production practices are needed to help safeguard household incomes and ensure that cocoa farming is a viable option for the next generation of growers, including young women. So alongside community development initiatives in cocoa-growing regions in Africa, the Foundation focuses intently on training and support designed to improve productivity – the first step toward improving livelihoods of farmers and their communities, and eliminating extreme poverty.

Within a three-year cycle, all registered farmers are trained in order to build capacity and raise awareness of sustainable cocoa production practices. The training covers, amongst others, an education in Good Agricultural Practices such as weeding, shade management, pruning, harvesting, etc.

Why isn’t all Callebaut® chocolate sustainable?
This development is a first, huge step. Our biggest chocolate range – Finest Belgian Chocolate – now supports sustainably grown cocoa. For other chocolates, such as Single Origin and Blend of origins, we need to source cocoa beans in other regions outside this programme to create the unique taste sensations of these chocolates. Our aim is of course to extend the scope of our sustainable sourcing programme to more countries and regions over time.

Is Callebaut®’s initiative in sustainability unique?
Callebaut® is the only Belgian chocolate couverture maker with dedicated expertise from bean to chocolate. This expertise now extends even further, to our commitment in sustainable cocoa cultivation. It makes this programme possible and unique.
