Natural Vanilla Ingredients' Labelling
Legal changes
According to the new EU regulation 1334/2008 on flavourings, the
requirements to label a flavour as “natural” have been changed.
This means that for the below flavourings the legal denominations
in the list of ingredients on our labels and technical sheets has
been adapted accordingly as of the 20th of January 2010:
Vanilla flavours
| Current Legal denomination | Legal denomination as of 20-Jan-2010 |
| Natural vanilla | Natural vanilla flavouring |
| Natural vanilla extract | |
| Natural vanilla powder | |
| Natural vanilla* (* refers to organic) | Natural vanilla powder* |
| Natural Bourbon vanilla | Natural Bourbon vanilla flavouring |
| Natural vanilla flavour | Natural vanilla flavouring |
Where until now “Natural vanilla” was labelled, different legal
denominations – depending on the ingredient used – apply.
Therefore, it is important to ask and check the new technical sheet
for your specific product.
Vanillin
The labelling of “Vanillin” remains unchanged. Reference to natural
is not possible as the Vanillin used by Barry Callebaut is not from
a natural source.
Other flavours
Other flavours used in Barry Callebaut products are under
evaluation. We will inform you in due course if changes to the
legal denominations of the used flavours are required.
Date of application
Date of application of the new EU regulation 1334/2008 on
flavourings is 20 January 2011. Foods lawfully placed on the market
or labelled prior to 20 January 2011 which do not comply with this
Regulation may be marketed until their date of minimum durability
or use-by-date. This means by 20 January 2011 all your labels and
advertising have to be adapted according to the above if
needed.
Additional information
As in the new EU Regulation 1334/2008 on flavourings the old
definitions on natural identical and artificial flavourings have
been deleted, reference in advertising or on the labels to “without
artificial flavours” will no longer be allowed as of 20 January
2011.
New version of the Technical sheet
We recommend you to contact your Barry Callebaut representative to
receive a new technical sheet in the case the above changes apply
to your products or if you would have problems with the proposed
changes.
